A brass Aarathi holder (also known as a Karpoorathattu or Camphor holder) is an essential and deeply symbolic item in Hindu religious practices, particularly during the Aarati ritual.
- Preparation: A piece of camphor is placed securely in the brass holder. Sometimes, a small amount of ghee (clarified butter) or oil with wicks is also used in multi-wick Aarati lamps.
- Lighting: The camphor (or wicks) is carefully lit, producing a bright, clear flame.
- Offering Light: The devotee holds the brass Aarathi holder in their right hand and waves it in a clockwise circular motion in front of the deity or sacred image. This movement is typically accompanied by devotional songs (Aarati bhajans), chants, and the ringing of bells.
